Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia

I am not gonna try to make it look pretty. Alice Springs is nothing to write home about!

No offence anyone but, seriously, there is nothing to do or see there. It is a small country town, "Une ville de passage" as I would say! I think the only people actually living there are the owners of the few different shops, the tour guides and the Aborigines. The rest are tourists, like me, stopping off one night in order to jump in the next bus tour to Uluru! It is way too quiet... Don't take it the wrong way, it is just my personal opinion.

The highlights though (yes yes I know!) were Bo's Saloon and the beautiful sunset on Anzac Hill. But overall I was glad to leave very early the next morning for the real stuff... I will tell you all about it in my next post!

PS: Alice Springs by Air with Qantas, 3 hours flight from Sydney.

  3. You're most definitely correct to state that there's nothing exciting about Alice. However, Alice is a great anchor spot in which to stay if you're into the "outback experience" of exploring. I lived there and, when I first arrived, was initially dismayed with the lack of entertainments in the area. But my friends and I soon started making exciting experiences for ourselves by kitting out our trucks and heading out into the bush every chance we got. I saw some of the most breath-taking scenery and met some of the most unusual people I've ever met (and I've met more than my share of "characters"). Unfortunately, for tourists, Alice is usually a stop-over and a means to an end to see Uluru. Don't get me wrong, Uluru is good, but there are tons of places to visit that are far more interesting and are much closer than the 4 to 5 hour drive it takes to get to The Rock. I hope you managed to get out to some of the local gorges (like Trephina or Glen Helen). I hope you went out to Hart Range to find gemstones. Did you find the Rainbow Valley? Did you look up at night and see the Milky Way in ways you never imaged? I hope you saw beyond the "dot paintings" of the Aboriginals and actually met some of them. Above all, I hope you did find something to enjoy and that you felt that the trip was worthwhile.

    1. Hey Chey, that is exactly what I am saying. Alice Springs itself is not exciting. But man, what surrounds AS is unreal. I absolutely loved it and will post about it soon. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to visit any of the places you mentioned above as we had no car to drive around in such a short time! But did see the Milky way, did meet the locals VERY closely and really think this trip was worth every single penny I spent on it. I would do it again. Thanks for your comment xx
